This will probably surprise you but there’s
a lot I know nothing about. Last night I was reminded about one subject area
where my understanding and knowledge is as low as it could possible be –
astronomy. The BBC is broadcasting live over three nights on the subject giving
some very basic information for those of us who ‘know nothing’.
What fascinated me as much as anything,
however, was how astronomers seem to have to come to different conclusions on
the same subject on a fairly regular basis because their understanding is
changing due to new information being found. New bits of kit in terms of
telescopes, computer programs etc., etc. are opening up new streams of
knowledge all the time – making it such an exciting field. You certainly cannot
be an astronomer with a closed mind.
And if I were to make a New Years’ Resolution
this would be it – that in 2011 I will
not close my mind to any new information, knowledge, ideas etc., that come
along in whatever field but especially my own of theology. I may not
necessarily change my mind on a given issue, but I will be willing to explore
the possibility that what I believe today may actually have to change following
some new discovery.
God is bigger than me; I don’t know
everything about him or his ways; but I am open to be led by him in discovery.
What about you?
