It may be one of the richest sports in the world but motor racing surely must be one of the most boring too. In this post-modern world I suppose I should qualify that by saying that it’s only my opinion – but actually it’s not far from being an undeniable fact, is it? What is interesting, however, is the news that Sir Stirling Moss (yes, you can actually be knighted in this country for driving a car very fast) is to retire from the sport at the grand age of 81.

But it is the reason why he is taking this decision that is mildly fascinating – he managed to scare himself during a race. Doing what exactly, I’m not sure, but it probably involved speed and the potential of crashing. Fear, therefore, is stopping him taking part in his beloved sport.
Now while this is quite sad, it also mirrors (and possibly signals and manoeuvres as well) the life that many lead. I know it’s been true for me. Fear has kept me from doing and saying many things over the years. Fear of appearing stupid, of being criticised, of not being liked … and the list goes on and on. It’s only in recent times – the past 18 months maybe – that I have felt free enough from fear to start saying and doing what has always been on my heart.

Sir Stirling, I hope life in the slow lane is not too boring for you, but while you take your foot off the accelerator, for some of us it’s time to press a little harder.
