A baby dies as the family throw themselves out of a second story flat in an attempt to ‘flee the devil’. You can read the full story here but it seems that the family, located in a town west of Paris, mistook the baby’s father as the devil and were so frightened they made their escape through a window and the result was a horrific tragedy.

Here in the UK we have heard stories of churches ending up abusing children in an attempt to rid them of ‘demonic witchcraft’. In a recent documentary on Channel 4 several church leaders were secretly filmed trying to cast out demons from children. While some were using the situation to gratify their own sexual desires with teenage girls, most were wholly sincere in what they were doing.

So the question in my mind is this: what on earth do these people believe in that could lead them to such actions? What underlying view of evil do they have that would make them so fearful when they believe they are facing it?

And while I question their belief I should probably have a look at my own – just in case.
