Well we have our balanced parliament
– but our guy won’t be there. We’re very disappointed, obviously. Dylan fought
a long and hard campaign. But with the Labour vote holding up so well it was
always going to be difficult to win here on Anglesey.
Having had little sleep overnight I’m
not sure I can come up with any great insights about the election results in
general, but I’ll try! Labour’s final week strategy of appealing to its core
vote worked. Gordon Brown hammered the point that the Tories will cut our
services – knowing full well that any government will have to do the same. But
it got their core vote out and made what could have been a terrible night for
them much better. The Tories still aren’t trusted by enough people in the UK – which after 13 years of Labour
rule is pretty astounding. Maybe it’s time we forgave them for the Thatcher
years? No? Just a suggestion!
The Lib Dem surge never happened.
That’s such a shame, for a better showing from them – if only in the popular
vote – would have made the case for voting reform even stronger.
But we have our balanced parliament.
Does this mean that voting reform is still on the agenda? I think so. Deals
have to be done to form a stable government and a referendum on PR could be a
part of that deal. Here’s hoping!
